Betsy DeVos gave a commencement speech at a historically black university and it went exactly how you'd expect
It's unclear what administrators at Bethune-Cookman University were imagining when they invited Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos to speak at their student's commencement ceremony, but it's far easier to guess what their students thought of the choice: No. Education Secretary Betsy DeVos was greeted with a deafening chorus of boos from students when she delivered her commencement speech at the historically black university on Wednesday. Some students turned their backs on the secretary and did everything they could to communicate their dissent. In normal circumstances, we'd suggest you listen to the full speech but, honestly, who ever listens to a full commencement speech. Alumni of the school have even offered to mail back their degrees. The education secretary hasn't exactly demonstrated a depth of knowledge about the history of race and education in America. In February, Betsy DeVos came under fire for misspelling the revered black historian W.E.B. Dubois' name in a tweet. Later that month, DeVos appeared to confuse school choice with school segregation. "HBCUs are real pioneers when it comes to school choice," DeVos said in a statement. Historically black colleges, it shouldn't have to be said, were built because students of color were denied entrance to all-white universities — not because of vouchers, which didn't exist yet. In April, DeVos rolled back Obama-era protections for student loan borrowers, which didn't exactly make her popular among ... students. None of that stopped the university from inviting DeVos to speak and awarding her an honorary doctorate. Badass dog chases a huge bear off its property
A doggo with a death wish had a standoff with a bear that wandered into its yard on Tuesday in Bradbury, California. The bear is apparently notorious in the neighborhood for terrorizing residents. On this particular stint, the bear took a dip in a pool, broke into a home and ate a family's avocados, and had a face-to-face confrontation with a dog. The incident with the dog, named Ba Bao, was captured on camera from a news helicopter. In the clip, the bear and dog have a brief standoff at the edge of the property before the bear moves forward, entering Ba Bao's lawn. SEE ALSO: Terrifying helmet cam footage shows a bear charging mountain bikers The pup retreated to the deck after multiple bluff charges from the bear, but when the bear turned its back and started to leave the property, Ba Bao charged. "What are you thinking, dog?" the helicopter cameraman can be heard saying. The bear left shortly after the charge, Ba Bao returned to its home. According to KTLA, Ba Bao, which means "meat bun" in Taiwanese, was adopted from the Palmdale Animal Control Center about a month ago, so it's likely that this is the first run-in it had with the bear. "It's very frightening of course. We didn't expect this confrontation," Eddie Hsu, Ba Bao's owner told KTLA. “I have small children. They play in the backyard every day in the afternoon.” After the confrontation with the dog, the bear hopped a fence, knocked over trash cans and disappeared into the woods. Donald Trump has hired a legal team to help defend him against allegations over his links with Russia, the White House has announced. The US leader has asked the unnamed Washington law firm to send a letter to a member of the Senate Judiciary Committee making clear he has no connections to the Kremlin, White House press secretary Sean Spicer said. The admission came after Senator Lindsey Graham, who ran against Mr Trump for the Republican presidential nomination, said he wanted to investigate whether the US leader had any commercial dealings with Moscow.
