Rival Syrian delegations on Wednesday weighed a UN proposal on developing a new constitution for the war-ravaged country, as a new round of peace talks entered a second day. The sixth round of UN-backed negotiations in Geneva is the latest drive to bring a political solution to the conflict which has claimed more than 320,000 lives since 2011. The talks opened with tensions high over a US charge that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's government was using a prison crematorium to hide evidence of thousands of murdered detainees.

US President Donald Trump’s administration has reportedly refused to allow Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to accompany him to to one of the holiest Jewish sites in the region during a visit next week. While Mr Trump is set to become the first serving US president to visit Jerusalem’s Western Wall, Mr Netanyahu will not be present, the White House said on Tuesday. The two leaders will meet for talks and dinner but the US president will visit the place of prayer accompanied by the Western Wall’s rabbi before going to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, the Holocaust Museum and the Israel museum, National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster told reporters.

Donald Trump told James Comey he should consider trying to imprison journalists for publishing classified information, it has been claimed. The request surfaced in a New York Times report that also claimed Mr Trump asked the former FBI director to drop his investigation into Michael Flynn, the ex-national security adviser. According to a memo written by Mr Comey and read to the paper, Mr Trump began their discussion by condemning leaks to the media and said Mr Comey should jail reporters who published classified information.
