Low-income Trump voters to be overwhelmingly hit by President's proposed budget cuts

Low-income Trump voters to be overwhelmingly hit by President's proposed budget cutsMany supporters of President Donald Trump will be hit hardest by his administration's new budget – with $3.6 trillion proposed to be slashed from government spending over the next decade, cutting support for programmes that low-income families rely upon. Mr Trump wants legislators to cut at least $610 billion from Medicaid and more than $192 billion from food stamps over a decade. Such deep cuts to such programmes have been attacked by Democrats and even some Republicans – and they will be tough to defend when Trump officials appear on Capitol Hill on Wednesday to discuss the plan.

Defiant Duterte threatens harsh measures as thousands flee Philippines unrest

Defiant Duterte threatens harsh measures as thousands flee Philippines unrestBy Romeo Ranoco PANTAR, Philippines (Reuters) - Thousands of civilians fled fighting in the Philippines on Wednesday as troops sought to contain Islamic State-linked militants who took over large parts of a city, set building ablaze and captured a Catholic priest and other Christians. President Rodrigo Duterte said he had no choice but to declare martial law on his native island of Mindanao following a failed raid by soldiers on Tuesday on a hideout of the Maute militant group, which triggered clashes and chaos across the largely Muslim city of Marawi. Duterte said Islamic State could not be allowed to gain a foothold in the Christian-majority Philippines and he would do whatever it took to rebuff extremists from the Maute group and the allied Abu Sayyaf, even if it meant many would die.

Syrian army says senior Islamic State militant killed

Syrian army says senior Islamic State militant killedThe Syrian army said on Wednesday it had killed Islamic State's military commander in Syria during operations in the north of the country, where the Russian-backed government forces are seizing more territory back from the jihadist group. If confirmed, this would represent a major blow against Islamic State (IS) ahead of an attack which the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) - an alliance of Kurdish and Arab fighters - are expected to launch against the jihadists in their stronghold of Raqqa city. A Syrian military source told Reuters the IS commander, Abu Musab al-Masri, had been the group's "minister of war" for Syria.
